The SWORD Project

2009/07/13

The SWORD Project is a free Bible software project. Its purpose is to create cross-platform open-source tools covered by the GNU General Public License. Tried 5 software that powered by the SWORD engine on Windows.

The first one is the stock version of the SWORD project on Windows. Appearance is not that great but it is backed by lots of resources from the SWORD project. Localization is not yet available.

The second one is SwordBible. SwordBible has numerous extra features added to the standard SWORD project. Look and feel also better than the stock one. However, localization still not consider here.

The third one is BPBible. It seems to be a very new member of the project. Latest version 0.44 is released on 20 May 2009 and it also support USB disk installation mode (portable software). It allows translators to work on localization too.

The fourth one is Alkitab Bible Study. It is build using JSword engine.  Initial screen present itself as very simple one. Java architecture also make it a bit slower than the others. However, its unlimited column-based presentation make it very unique in this type of software.  Localization is also not found here.

The last one is Xiphos, (formerly known as GnomeSword). It is a Bible study tool written for Linux, UNIX, and Windows. This Windows build supports ReadAloud (text-to-speech) and transliteration of non-Latin character sets. The default font is not that nice for Chinese passages. Luckily, the program allows me to change a font that display more properly. Localization is supported but can’t find the place to select other languages.
